Building from the ground up

My husband and I have been talking for the past few years about all the things we want to do once we buy our first home.  Well here we are, it is done.  We bought our first home complete with a half acre of land.  So begins our journey to Homesteading from the ground up, quite literally   It has an attached garage with room for him to work on small projects and a small "barn" that we plan to raise meat rabbits in.  I am hoping to have a few laying hens in the next few years, but one project at a time is all we need.  We have been spending the summer and fall preparing for the grand garden we plan to have this spring.  Our ultimate goal is to be as self  sustainable as a family of 5 can be on half an acre.

Preparing the land has consisted of tearing out unwanted plants and shrubs, lots and lots of them, and just taking the first growing season to observe where we should be planting in the spring.  We got moved in too late to begin planting this year, and with the drought I am not too disappointed.  Especially after watching various youtube videos of how badly it affected yields this year.   I am hoping to start a youtube channel to go with this blog as soon as I get a video camera.  No telling when that will be though.  I have started a facebook page, which will probably be updated more than this blog.  Not sure how often I will write here.  I am sure there will be more to write about in the warmer months than during the cold months. Here is the link to our facebook Our Journey to Homesteading. Pictures of the current condition of our homestead are soon to come.  Until then happy homesteading.
